Primary Education in Singapore

The  education   system of  Singapore is  very  comprehensive. In Singapore a child undergoes six years of primary education. This period of primary education can be divided into to different stages.  These stages are known as foundation stage and orientation stage. From  primary 1 to primary 4 is  considered  as the  foundation stage  where as primary 5 and 6 are  referred  to  as orientation stage.   

At the foundation stage, that is from primary one to four, the core curriculum includes English, the mother tongue or the language spoken by the  child and Mathematics. These three subjects are given top priority in education at this stage. Apart from this there are some supplementary subjects that are taught at this level too.  These subjects include music, art and craft, physical education as well as social studies.  Science is included as a subject from Primary 3.  To maximize their potential, students are categorized according to their learning abilities before they advance to the orientation stage.  At the end of Primary 6, each student has to sit for the Primary School Leaving Examination.
